March business crime prevention update

Our Business Crime Team in partnership with Parkguard continues to address crime issues and intelligence gathering in the Angel area. Recent activity has included:
- Six people asked to leave the area and eight people advised regarding their conduct.
- Thirty locations monitored to provide reassurance.
- Five members of the public assisted.
- Seven street begging incidents addressed.
- Seven anti-social behaviour warnings issued.
The team's important in-person liaison with the area's communities has included meetings with retail staff (111), park users (18), and local residents (12), as well as victims, parents and young people, where crime prevention advice has been shared. The team has also been carrying out joint foot patrols with Sergeant Caroline supporting businesses affected by the unacceptable behaviour of an individual who has been intimidating female shop staff.
To support affected staff, the BID provided personal attack alarms and guidance on handling similar situations in the future.
Joint patrols with the police and officers from the BID's Business Crime Team will continue, as well as patrols during the week and weekends.
New lead officer on shoplifting
PC Laura Brand will be the lead police officer working with the BID to tackle shoplifting. Together we will be visiting our retailers where we will explain how we are tackling shoplifting and how they can assist. We are currently focussing on our prolific offenders – two are now in prison and two are wanted having failed to attend court. Tackling youth disorder
A dedicated team has been formed consisting of BID Business Crime Team officers, Islington Council Community Safety Officers, and police to tackle ongoing youth disorder in Chapel Market.
Officers are working both in plain clothes and uniform to identify those involved. We have also received valuable assistance from local headteachers, who have been present on-site to help.
